What is a Satellite Beam?
A satellite beam is a ray or flow of satellite radio waves focused in a particular direction. The area on the ground, or the geographical that the beam covers is known as the beams footprint.
For satellite broadband small ‘spot’ beams are used. These beams have a much smaller footprint, incomparison to satellite television beams, which can cover an entire continent with one beam.
These spot beams are used to provide concentrated power and also to allow for data to flow in both directions along the beam with the same frequencies.
Due to this, several satellite beams must be employed to cover the entirity of the UK. The fourth satellite beam has just now gone live TODAY, providing us with 90% connectivity across the UK.

Pros of Satellite Broadband
- 100% Connectivity and Global Coverage
Satellite broadband provides 100% connectivity, no matter where you live and regardless of any hill, tree and other land masses that have previously blocked your broadband connection. As the internet connection is beamed from your home, straight up to a satellite in space, there is no internet mast in which to connect to. This is what makes satellite broadband extremely attractive to rural and remote areas, as it provides coverage to any location on earth.
- Superfast
Satellite broadband is extremely fast, and is up 35 times faster than ‘dialup’. In general is classified as ‘superfast broadband’ as it provides over 30Mbps (megabits per second).
Satellite WiFi’s packages provide up to 30, 50 and 100Mbps.
- Simple, Quick and FREE Installation
The installation of satellite broadband is very fast and simple in comparison to other broadband alternatives, such as fiber. The home satellite that in mounted on your roof, can be installed within a few hours. The turn over from point of sale until your satellite is installed and fully operational is approximately 10 days.
- No Phone Line Needed
Satellite broadband does not require a phone line, so you do not need to have one at all. Unfortunately for those who are looking for a phone line, they will have to get one from another provider as this cannot be provided through satellite broadband.
- Reliability
Satellite broadband provides a highly stable connection and has much lower chances of outages. With other underground networks (aka terrestrial networks) such as dial up and fiber broadband, there is much more opportunity for faults along their long cable lines that go on for hundreds of miles.
Cons of Satellite Broadband
- Latency
Latency is the time it takes for data to be transmitted, from one source to another and is measured in milliseconds. For satellite broadband, data has to travel up to a satellite in space and back down, which can cause a level of latency at times. Although this latency does not affect general internet uses, such as zoom, skype or streaming, it does effect online gaming, as even a slight delay in connection can ruin a game.
Due to this, we recommend against satellite broadband to any customers who have online gamers in their household.
